Web Development
Prescient Technologies LLC is a collaboration between two young professionals with a combined 20 years of experience in coding, web development, network security, graphic design, content writing, and marketing to name a few.
One of the benefits of being a youthful company is that we are not hindered by old, unreliable, and just plain sloppy coding and network security practices. When an internet company has been in the business for 15-20 years, they tend to deliver the greatest innovations of 15-20 years ago. Instead, we build sites that will be supported for years to come and meet the criteria of the W3C standards compliance – This drastically improves your chances of being found by the general populace, makes search engines happy.
All too often web developers tend to provide a bare minimum and cut corners whenever possible. Our goal is to break this trend and provide superior web sites inside-and-out at an affordable rate. It is our mission to exude integrity and ensure our customers are getting the quality product they deserve.
Content Management
The key attributes of a great website are attractive design, well-written content, clean code with attention to accessibility, ease of maintenance, and longevity. Ease of maintenance is achieved through use of a Content Management System (CMS).
A CMS is a behind-the-scenes web application that allows you or a developer to easily edit and manipulate the content, menus, forms, extensions, and everything else on your web site. With a little training, you can edit the content yourself without touching any code (we provide a tutorial at the end of development for our clients). This cuts down on a lot of time spent and costs incurred in the long run, especially since making a single change to a static (non-CMS) website requires manipulation of the code on every single page.
There are a number of different proprietary CMSs (like ASP.net, Yahoo Site Builder) and open source CMSs (Joomla, Drupal, Plone) out there. We recommend the Joomla open source CMS for a number of reasons: It's easy for our clients to use without any technical knowledge, has no upfront or monthly fees, can be manipulated to a greater degree than proprietary systems, and works across a broader range of platforms. Open source projects even tend to have better security testing, by nature of a much larger pool of developers handling the code. And any features you want to add down the road (like integrated google maps, blogs, forums, or the like) can be set up with more options and little to no cost.
Code Standards
The longevity of a web site is based on the quality of the code. If a developer adheres to what are known as the W3C Standards Compliant coding practices, the code will be supported for years to come and will be accessible to the greatest swathe of internet users. Sites with 'bad code' do not work well across different browsers and platforms and quickly become obsolete. This accessibility issue is also relevent to search engine rankings (SEO), since the search engine spiders favor sites with clean code. We abide by the W3C standards for the XHTML and CSS of every website we create.
